Los Feliz Neighborhood Update

When I moved to Los Feliz in the ’90s, we were all still swing dancing — hitting The Dresden to watch Marty and Elayne, ordering Merlot at Bourgeois Pig, and smoking cigarettes outside Birds. I loved it then, and I love it now.

The architecture in Los Feliz is pure Old Hollywood — a stunning mix of Hollywood Regency homes, storybook Tudors, sprawling Spanish Revivals, and pristine Mid-Century Moderns. It’s also home to some of the most notable architects in Los Angeles history, including:

  • Frank Lloyd Wright – Ennis House (Mayan Revival / textile block, 1924) and Hollyhock House (Barnsdall Art Park, 1921)
  • Lloyd Wright (Frank Lloyd Wright Jr.) – John Sowden House (“Jaws House,” 1926), Samuel-Novarro House (1928), Taggart Residence
  • R.M. Schindler
  • John Lautner
  • Raphael Soriano
  • Gordon Kaufmann
  • Stiles O. Clements

The median home price in Los Feliz is around $1,961,000.

Some of my current favorites in the neighborhood include The Greek Theatre — smaller than the Hollywood Bowl, easier to get to, and just a perfect outdoor venue. If there’s someone you love playing there, go.

For food, All Time is the ultimate neighborhood spot. Their Big Ass Salad is heaven (I have the dressing recipe — hint: lots of sugar — but it still tastes better there), and their salmon? Unreal.

And though technically Los Feliz-adjacent, Saffy’s and Found Oyster are both musts. Saffy’s has the best hummus in the world and an insane lobster skewer with literally five pieces of lobster and yes it’s $40, but worth it.  Found Oyster is just beautiful — perfectly chilled oysters, and natural wines.
